This 4 days tour takes you for gorilla tracking in the impenetrable forest of the Virunga gorilla park in Congo. From Rwanda, visit Congo via Uganda’s boarder at Kisoro. The Virunga Park (Congo) consists of five gorilla families to date – three at Djomba-Bikele and three families at Bukima. A total of 20 persons can track at Djomba and another 20 at Bukima, thus up to 40 trackers can see gorillas daily in Congo. Visitors to Congo stay the night before in Uganda at Kisoro. Visas are arranged and obtained the day before, and the next day, they start earl early at 06h00 for the 2 hour journey to the Congo Gorilla Park.

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival and City tour
Arrive at Kanombe (Kigali) airport. Meet and greet before taking the 30 minute drive to Kigali City.
Time permitting, go for a tour of the city (optional). This includes a visit to a genocide memorial. Traditional crafts can be bought. To most visitors the city tour of Kigali and the genocide sites can be an emotional event. O/N: Hotel Chez Lando or Mille Collines Hotel (BB).

DAY 2: Kigali to Kisoro boarder town in Uganda
Transfer to Kisoro in Uganda, a journey that takes four hours. First, is the three hours journey North of Kigali to Kinigi through Ruhengeri and on to the Cyanika boarder. Enjoy the rolling hills for which Rwanda is well known. Finalise boarder arrangements and cross into Uganda. Either guided nature walk in Gahinga or climb a volcano, visit the natural, beautiful-looking Lake Mutanda, surrounded by the volcanoes, take a walk on the shores. Lunch in Kisoro. DAY 3: Gorilla tracking in Congo
Transfer to the Bunagana boarder with Congo, from there drive to the Park Headquarters to be briefed about gorilla etiquette before setting off into the forest to track gorillas in Parc National des Virunga of Congo. Gorilla tracking through the forest, hills and swamps can be tough, arduous and tiring, sometimes taking up to 8 hours in the forest. But coming face to face with the great primates is well worth the effort. Return to Uganda in the afternoon.
Dinner and overnight at Travellers Rest Hotel (FB)

DAY 4: Back to Rwanda and fly out
Leave for Kigali in Rwanda. After breakfast, transfer to Kigali. On your way to Kigali, several stops will be made to admire the scenery. Rwanda is the country with over thousand hills!
Transfer to the airport for your flight. [Approximate driving time: 4 hours]

To track gorillas each person must have the day’s gorilla permit which needs to be arranged and paid for in advance, preferably at least 10 months for the high seasons – June-September and December-February; or latest 4-6 months in advance for the low seasons – October-November and March-May.
