Treking to the Gorillas - Treking out and up to see the gorillas is an awesome experience. First we met in an area near the national parks where the park employees put us into a... read more group of eight, all near the same age, which determined where in the park we would meet our gorilla family. They served us fabulous coffee as well, then we went to the trail head and started climbing at 9:30 am. Every step was difficult - constant elevation, lots of rocks, uneven earth, chopped neetles and vegetation. This hike is not for the faint-hearted - it was really hard work but doable because of the porters who wereessential to our success. They often held our arms and pushed us up and up - always keeping us from falling. They saved us numerous times, always with a smile on their faces and encouragement.
When we finally found the family we’d been searching for, the porters: stepped away and let us near the silverbacks. We thought it was important for us to use the porters, not just for their help but for the community as well. Just because some trekkers are young and don’t necessarily need the physical help, we recommend that everyone should hire porters because it gives Rwandans jobs. They know what they are doing and would signal to us to move to another place for better views. The gorillas would move right next to us, then plop down and roll around. We saw moms and babies and one alpha male. Our hour passed too quickly, but we were lucky to see lots of gorillas close up. We headed down to reach the trail head arriving at 3 pm. It was a great day, but I don’t think we could have done it again the next day - with such tired legs and charlie horses - so we’re glad to have spent just the $1500 each. We are 79 and 77, but we did it!
Our guide for the week was Fidele of Du Tours Africa, and he was the best so if you’re looking for a knowledgeable person for your trip to Rwanda, look him up.

An absolutely amazing experience. The gorillas were a meter or so away which was just madness! We felt extremely safe throughout thought with very capable guides. My tour guide Emma... read more was awesome and went above and beyond to make sure I was happy and comfortable. After the airline lost my luggage (nightmare!) he even lent me his sisters hiking boots! I don’t know what I would have done without him. The lodge was GORGEOUS and I can’t believe they don’t include pictures of it on their website because it looks like somewhere celebrities would stay! The drive is a long one but if your guide is good (like Emma) it will be a pleasant one. Go for it!!

We spent 9 fantastic days on a trip organized for us by Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda. Martin was a great giude, very helpful and very knowledgeable about Uganda it’s... read more people and culture. He made us feel comfortable all the time.
The itinerary was well thought out and it provided us with an amazing experience. We had great time with gorillas in Biwindi Forest. After less than 2 hours of hiking we met our herd and there was a lot of excitement and adrenaline. Previously we were on chimpanzee tracking and we also highly recommend this activity. The only caveat we have (we told Martin) was the accommodation in The Haven Lodge. This place was not up to the agreed standard.
Uganda was a very positive surprise for us and we sincerely recommend Go Gorilla Trekking to everyone who wants to visit this country.

We'll be back, for sure. And GoGorilla Trekking will be our first choice.
